The Department of Anaesthesiology is staffed by well qualified and experienced anaesthetists. All patients undergoing surgery are seen preoperatively by an anaesthetist and a medical history taken to elicit factors relative to anaesthesia. A full examination is carried out and, if necessary, the patient is referred for further investigation and treatment prior to surgery.

The department also runs an epidural pain relief service for childbirth, and there is an anaesthetist continuously available for emergencies including cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Regional anaesthesia, including epidural, spinal and nerve blocks are given for pain relief during and after surgery.

The hospital has 7 operating theatres which are used for an extensive range of surgery. The theatres are well equipped, and are staffed by highly experienced theatre nurses and technical support staff. The anaesthetic apparatus used is modern, and with monitoring devices that match the best in Western hospital care.

Maintenance standards are consistently high and extensive checks are continually carried out to ensure quality control. Sterility is monitored regularly by the Department of Microbiology. All theatre staff receive regular medical check-ups for early detection of any signs of infection. A modern Central Sterile Supplies Department provides the theatres with sterile equipment and instruments.

Following surgery, patients are taken to the Recovery Room where a careful watch is kept on all vital parameters prior to their return to the ward. A strict protocol is maintained throughout the entire area.
